A Big Debut – The newest Cleveland Browns’ wide receiver Josh Gordon was easy to notice on the first day of training camp. Gordon, who is wearing jersey #86, stood taller than everyone else in the receiving corps and just about everyone on the entire field.
As far as his play, it was tough to take much away. He looked smooth and caught everything thrown to him but was obviously moving at a slower pace than normal practices. This is a slower paced practice to begin with, but Gordon is also nursing a quad injury he suffered when working out for NFL clubs before the supplemental draft.
Benjamin’s Growth –Rookie wide receiver Travis Benjamin struggled with drops throughout rookie camp, mini-camp, and OTA’s. He continued to have ups and downs to start off training camp.
Nolan Cromwell, who was hired to help assist with the offense but most specifically the receiving corps, praised him early in practice for making a tough catch and coming out of his routes well. Unfortunately, Benjamin also dropped two easy passes. It will be interesting to watch how he develops throughout camp and into the preseason.
Taking the Time To Teach – Today’s practice was for rookies, quarterbacks, and select veterans. The coaching staff took a lot of extra time to make sure they were teaching the young guys. Josh Gordon received extra coaching after almost every snap, the special teams were walked through many different scenarios they might see, and Brandon Weeden spent extra time with Pat Shurmur talking about routes and timing.
Two QBs is Not Too Many For Richardson – Until Pat Shurmur decides to officially name Brandon Weeden the starting quarterback, everyone who walks in front of the media will get questions about the situation. Rookie running back Trent Richardson said he has no problem with not knowing who the starter will be. He talked about having two starting QBs going into the first week of every season he played at Alabama.
“Same old thing just at a different place,” said Richardson.
