Cleveland State basketball fans can get fired up now that the Horizon League 2012 - 2013 men’s basketball schedule has been released. This will be an exciting year for the Vikings and the Horizon League, with Butler moving on to the Atlantic 10. That gives CSU plenty of new rivals, so let’s take a look at the marquee match-ups on the schedule: .
At Valparaiso, Friday Jan 4th
Last year’s HL regular season champ, Valparaiso enter this season with a strong chance of repeating. With player-of-the-year Ryan Broekhoff returning for the Crusaders, this will be a battle of Valpo’s veterans against the youth and athleticism of the Vikings. This game is important for CSU to set the tone for the rest of the HL season. A win on the road against Valpo could provide this young team with the confidence it will need going forward.
At Wright State, Wednesday Jan 9th
Wright State is one of the toughest places to play in the HL. Over the past two years the Vikings have pulled out some nail-biters in Dayton -- winning by two points in 2011 (74-72) and in last year’s league opener (45-43).
Detroit, Saturday Jan 12th
This game will feature two of the most athletic teams in the HL. The Titans won the HL tourney last year after struggling to find consistency for most of the season. Ray McCallum should challenge Broekhoff for player-of-the-year honors and will be a difficult defensive match-up for the Vikings. Along with Valpo, Detroit will be the marquee rivalry for CSU for the foreseeable future.
At Milwaukee, Jan 17th & At Green Bay, Jan 19th
Winning two games on this road trip is almost impossible. Enough said.
Other games to note: Home against Valpo on Feb 9; at Detroit on Feb. 12; Bracket Busters the weekend of Feb 22.
