Extra Points …
The lowdown: The Browns own a league-high 13 picks in the April 26-28 draft. Today we introduce a feature borrowed from Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork. com.
We will review the Browns’ position in each round.
The Browns’ selections are:
First round – Fourth overall and 22nd
Second round – 37th
Third round – 67th
Fourth round – 100th, 118th
Fifth round – 139th, 160th
Sixth round – 204th (compensatory), 205th (comp)
Seventh round – 211th, 245th (comp), 247th (comp)
The fourth pick, last five years
2011: WR A.J. Green, Bengals
2010: OT Trent Williams, Redskins
2009: LB Aaron Curry, Seahawks
2008: RB Darren McFadden, Raiders
2007: DE Gaines Adams, Buccaneers
Analysis: Green established himself quickly his rookie year as a special wideout. He hurt the Browns with play-of-the-game catches in both meetings. Williams has made 23 starts at left tackle in his two seasons, but was suspended the last four games last year for violations of the league substance abuse policy. Injuries have caused McFadden to miss 19 games in four years. He has one 1,000-yard rushing season and has averaged over 5.2 yards a carry the past two years. Curry was surprisingly traded to Oakland last year for a seventh-round pick in 2012 and a conditional pick in ’13. Adams died in 2010 from a heart condition.
Past Browns picks at No. 4
1962: WR Gary Collins, Maryland
Analysis: One of the franchise’s all-time greats, he caught three TDs in the Browns’ last NFL championship game in 1964. He’s just as proud of doubling as the team’s punter for six seasons and leading the NFL with a 46.7-yard average in 1965.
The 22nd pick, last five years
2011: OT Anthony Castonzo, Colts
2010: WR Demaryius Thomas, Broncos
2009: WR Percy Harvin, Vikings
2008: RB Felix Jones, Cowboys
2007: QB Brady Quinn, Browns
Analysis: Castonzo struggled through 12 starts, allowing six sacks, and missed four games with a high ankle sprain. Thomas has 54 catches and six TDs in two seasons. He’s coming into his own just as Peyton Manning joins the Broncos. In three years, Harvin has averaged 72 catches and six TDs and another 195 yards as a runner. In four seasons, Jones played second fiddle in the Cowboys backfield and never rushed for more than 800 yards or scored more than three TDs. Quinn is now with his third team (Chiefs) in six years.
Past Browns picks at No. 22
2007: Quinn, Notre Dame
1981: CB Hanford Dixon, Southern Mississippi
1973: OT Pete Adams, Southern California
Analysis: Quinn regressed in each of his three seasons in Cleveland. Dixon was one of the cornerstones of the Browns’ five consecutive playoff teams, a three-time Pro Bowl selection. Adams was drafted to supplant Doug Dieken at left tackle, but was moved to left guard and suffered four injury-plagued seasons.
